With the recent incidents of rape cases in Delhi and Metropolitan cities, So many news reports, blogs, protests and other ways of expression have been surfacing. Many blogs and foreign news channels citing India to be the least secure place for women made me introspect the situation of the country. A country of 1.2 billion population and sex ratio of 940 females for 1000 men. Considering monogamy literally leaves out 3.85 million males in the country without a partner. In such a scenario and in a world where sex is over rated everywhere, the wrong doing begins.
As the
whole country goes on a rage asking the government to take harsh actions on
these people, it’s true that the cases might decrease but up to what extent? As
for the information I could gather there have been 24,206 cases filed in 2011 and
as every expert agrees the number is more than the official figure. If the sex ratio of the states is
considered the ratio is worse than the average for many states varying from
1080- 618. With such a bizarre ratio
arises the topic of human trafficking across borders. Though human trafficking
is illegal, 200,000 humans are trafficked across the borders. All for what?? Just to satisfy the human crave for
lust. Looking at the numbers and by a rough calculation, it’s a quite huge
amount of males left out in the country. But one thing people should realize sex is way overrated comparing
to living.
So, how
much might the harsh sentencing affect
the rape violence in India? Let’s say it reduces the cases by a huge margin.
With the decrease in the rape violence, the cases for the molestation increase. Same story continues and a series of
cases of molestation will hit the news asking a harsh sentencing for it. What
about the human desire of lust among the left out people? They go in search of
the illegal brothels that run on human trafficking. The rate of increase of
STD’s which is already high in the country increases a lot more.
So why
not make organised prostitution legal which can reduce violence. Making it legal has its
advantages. Regulation helps reduce the trafficking with a
constant eye on the organisation with verification of identities. There will be organisations pushing the police to the violence cases into consideration. Mutually every often in regular intervals government organisations need to check the identities of each and every person int the organisations to put a check for the trafficking as well as the unwanted pulling of people into this. It helps
control the rate of spreading STD’s if a compulsory test for the members is made.
An idea though many may have thought of but won’t speak as they may get mocked but someone has to.
Prostitution is legal in many developed countries too as well as the developing
and underdeveloped countries.
Taking
about sex is a like a taboo in our society. It’s a sensitive area that the
politicians do not risk to talk about. As the heading indicates, the opinion I
have put forth here is a mere idea
subject to discussion about its pros and cons. It’s an idea that might be worth
reducing the worse situation in the country. As one reads the article think
rationally and give your opinion rather than just a comment condemning the idea
bluntly.
PS: I am not saying that the strict laws shouldn't be or need not be implemented but pointing out that the strict laws that we think are strict won't seem strict to the criminals for long if this isn't implemented alongside strict laws is my opinion and wanted to know the wrong side and difficulties of the idea.

Instead of legalising prostitution which might further worsen the situation....why dont we change our attitudes towards women.....prostitution puts women at further risk as they will be either be forced or find it a easy source of money....prostitution degrades women to the status of sex objects. For those who claim prostitution is the source of employment for some women...there are a lot number of other avenues they can work.yes it requires a lot of work to be done....but it is inevitable that something has to be done to transform the society.Even modern day movies have started portraying women as mere sex objects. Why do men resort to sexual violence??It is bcos men think women to be weak,as sex objects which can be used to satisfy lust.No amount of stringent law, prostitution is going to curb this menace..I t is only the change of attitudes in society towards women...teaching men and women to respect themselves and the opposite gender and life is something more than mere sex.Why does this gender ratio keep fallling down continuously, female foeticide happening almost every other day...It is the societal values of dowry and inferiority imposed upon women...Suppose prostitution is legalised, only rich people can afford it..poor people are still left with nothing but the option of rape to satisfy their lust.It is not going to help the cause.Prostitution infact derides our respect for women. The countries where prostitution has been legalized have not shown a great improvement.Anyways this is a personal opinion.Comments on this issue are invited...and i have liked the audacity and versatility of authors arguments and sensitivity of this issue.
ReplyDeleteyes agree with the attitude problem, female foeticide being the reasons for the happening. But when it comes to the point of changing the attitude..... when so many incidents being published by the news channels couldn't affect the attitude of many people who thinks that its partly the fault of women too.... its a lot difficult process change the attitude of those men who have decided or about to decide to take the wrong path. When people talk about gender degradation, I ask them to retrospect the concept of degradation to case happenings..... consider an insane person filled with lust " option "1. A women who doesn't want to bee looked at as a sexual object being tortured 2.A woman who doesn't care to be tagged as such being an option to him if she is willing to" ..... No sane person would choose option 1. Though this is implemented in many developed countries hasn't bought the level to very low same goes with the strict laws those countries have implemented. This is a opinion of mine which I thought could help reduce happenings along with the strict rules. I have put this blog to know the serious problems other than gender degradation which is all surfacing perception until you think through completely. Thank you for your thoughts as well as for the last line :D

ReplyDeleteThis topic is highly sensitive especially when it comes to Indian society.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Prostitution is legal in India(read SITA act of 1956 and PITA(Amendment of SITA)1986) which clearly says a woman can trade her body attributes but with certain guidelines(not near public area/age bar etc). But activities/third parties which facilitate prostitution are illegal like brothels/pimps in order to prevent trafficking.
For social issues like this, Indian policies/laws can't fully be extracted and inspired by any developed nation because of India's highly heterogenous society. India is a place where mob gets crazy over an Indian lesbian/gay movie, where a familiar/relative might be bigger threat to a girl rather than an outsider, where kid-parent relationship still lack a discussion over sex-related issues and informal sex education; making brothels legal(I assume by prostitution, you meant brothels legality in your comment since you were comparing it with developed countries) may even worsen the situation. Human trafficking/Kidnapping may rise even higher because now brothels are legal, humans are easier to sell. (Human trafficking is still a very big problem in India which lacks strict laws). It will induce sex-tourism in India which definitely will not be acceptable by Indian society.
Policies should not be preventive rather they should be educative.
The possible solution to this problem is awareness, education and some law amendments.
-We need more projects like "Parivartan by delhi police in 2005"(still not sure, why its not functional now).
-There should be a formal sex education and moral education(majorly concentrating on treating the opposite gender with equality and respect) in school.
-A lot of NGO's are working in this area, if they are regulated in a strategic way (since they are working for common objective, they could be centralized), such incidents could reduce at a faster pace. -Law should be amended (not sure about the current law but have read in a lot of cases, wherein victim was questioned so hard without sympathy, that victim took the case back). At-least, some changes are necessary with appropriate measurement so that this law can't be misused by female genre too.
Ultimately, its a better and evolved society which every law and policy aims at and every individual hopes at.
thank you for your time and detailed explanation :)
Delete1000 men. 940 women.
ReplyDelete60 men left out. UNHAPPY.

1000 men. 940 women.
Say 40 prostitutes.
Now, 100 men left out. But only SOME UNHAPPY.
40 women left out. UNHAPPY.
_________________________
The total amount of happiness decreased. Why should 40 women *choose* to become UNHAPPY? Why should they sacrifice? No woman with sane mind ENJOYS prostitution. Here's an analogy to what you are saying..
If there are 10 kids and only 8 chocolates. You are saying let us only give out 6 for **free** and share the other 2 over 4 for 1 rupee each. Because otherwise the 2 kids will snatch/destroy the chocolates from others.
You don't make any sense.

Another little perspective is, the imbalance in the sex ratio is a direct consequence of a generation's fucked up attitude towards female child.
Why do you promote more negative attitude towards women?
_________________________
The solution is being right, and doing right things and importantly *education* - increase the morale! Also, finally waiting for the new generation you just built to come into existence.
In my analogy the solution to the chocolate issue will be that the left out do nothing, understanding completely why they got no candy. It's because of their previous generation's fault. So they blame them.
/pay no attention to the man behind the scene.
Agreeing with fact of fucked up attitude for female child birth the society has, I have to disagree with the rest of the comment and a poor analogy ( side note that's how it always happens with food.. ever heard of the concept ration?)......... you thing 40 women who out are unhappy ? The pan India survey over 3000 prostitutes 71% say they voluntarily chose the path. So All I am saying was to let only those who want to by regulating prostitution ............ and by the way prostitution is legal and organised prostitution is illegal. And this is like a short term side running solution to the long term solution of creating awareness about wrong attitude of society towards girl child.
